Hope you’re all well and enjoying 2014 so far? I cannot believe how quickly January went for me but – as they say – time fly’s when you’re having fun. It also seems to fly when you’re beating your head against a desk, crying and rocking in a corner but that just seems to be a part of game dev.
Or maybe that’s just me…
Plan is, massive news aside, to update on a monthly basis on here, as often as possible on the dev blog (invites coming asap) and a weekly update on the facebook and main site. That’s the plan anyhoo…
January was equal parts awesome and frustration as I took the executive decision to take Jason into Unity! He is very much 2 dimensional, do not fear – although there were times when the third dimension was calling if only to make life in the program ‘easier’.
The switch very much comes down to Unity being so multiplatformable as I have every intention of fulfilling my promise of cross platform compatibility for PC, Mac and Linux users. The fact I didn’t use Unity from the start was that I had no hope of creating an engine anywhere close to the amazing features of Visionaire but now with the awesome Adventure Creator plug-in from Chris Burton.
Yes, Chris, this is all your fault.
For anyone interested in the plug in I give it 5*. There are definitely some areas that are a bit WIP when it comes to 2D but it deserves the five stars (from me anyway) for the level of support and regular updates that Chris is putting into it.
There is a learning curve there’s no doubt and I’m still not QUITE there with something equalling the original demo in regards to content but the level of interaction with items like hotspots and similar are making for a much more professional title – at least that’s what I’m hoping 😉
To break up the devathon I have also finished rendering out the next three scenes, updated the relevant characters for these scenes and got to sketching our first heroic Redskirt: Private Lauro, winner of the competition last year.
I’ll be posting pics of all of this first on the dev blog and then up for everyone else.
Plan for Feb is to make the whole game… as a walkthrough! 😉 So that I can see the game as a whole I’ll be sketching up every environment at size (ie. Not the child like scribbles I have in my sketchbook) and placing all the characters (redskirts included, will be chasing you all up for pics) so that Jason can stroll around the land of Lemnos and I can make sure it makes, well, if not ‘sense’ then at least try to make sure its fun!
Now I’m (hopefully) out of my little dev hell experience (my fragile little mind cannae take it) I’ll be posting on the blogs much more regularly and with more to show.
Something I didn’t make enough time for in the campaign was for some of the special thanks for those groups of people who really rallied behind the campaign and helped out massively with money, shares and general word-spreading.
This month I want to give a big thank you to my ex-team mates over at Webinfinity who even went as far as suggesting they scrap Secret Santa and instead all put the money into my kickstarter instead (or so I’m told).
Really touched by all your support and messages seeing as I know I drove you all up the wall on a daily basis and generally ignoring you all each lunchtime while I scribbled furiously away on Jason!
That last bit sounded wrong.
Anyhoo, thank you all – hope that we’ll all have a chance to catch up on a first Friday sometime soon!
I also had a great deal of help and one area that really made all the difference were the ex-‘starters who pitched Jason to their own generous backers in forms of updates, tweets and pledges too!
