A… characterful update!

Hello Reader!

I’ll hold off on the big cookie competition reveal for a paragraph or so (course, you can always scroll down past my waffle) to get this post started properly!

A year ago today I was probably up way past my bed time working on that day’s post. I can’t believe I managed to create a post a day when today I struggle to fit in one a month – and I thought I was busy back THEN!

I’m going to write a proper anniversary post for the launch day but I remember my birthday being a crazy time right in the middle of that insane month of posts, pitches, interviews and amazingly supportive messages and generous pledges.

*sniff* hold back the tears, dammit… Anyhoo, without further ado – The Cookie Competition results!!

I had NO idea this was going to be so popular – I think 55 comments might be a personal best! In true school maths style (and to echo Wim Jansen’s most logical workings for his guess) and to generally try to make it fair I have shown my workings as so:

*The ones that broke went on to a... better place (just not the tin).
*The ones that broke went on to a… better place (just not the tin).

All of which hopefully shows how I arrived at a tin of 94 cookies. Shame on all of those that guessed so low – forties (ultimate answer aside…) and PixelBoy – 25? To think I could be so underhanded! Shocking.

That said, here are those closest to the correct amount and whom I will soon be chasing for photos of you and a plus one of your choice to sit with you at the amphitheatre of Cutscenithica!

Mr. Doug Neumann has the first with a spot on 94! Doug is closely followed by equidistant Mark P (96) and the mysterious Joseph (92). Well done all, very much looking forward to seeing those pretty faces – thank you all for the messages and for taking part in such a daft idea!

One thing that those closest to the project and the many astute among you have noticed is that for a long time I have wrestled to settle on a defined style for Jason, his crew and the many weird and wonderful characters that inhabit this little corner of Ancient Greece.

I’m really excited by the new ‘look’ – all very inspired by some of my favourite animation styles from the 40’s and 50’s (before my time, I’m only 35 – honest) and also the two series of the Pink Panther’s Inspector cartoon’s which I still love today.

It’s a style that is coming very easy to me and while some of the above are not 100% where I want them, I am happy with the progress.

And, finally… Jason.

I know this is a departure from the style and design you all backed, I just hope you are still happy with it – in fact I’m hoping you like this design even more than the original! For me, he works so much better, he’s fun to draw and animate and is no longer QUITE so cartoon networky that I hope he won’t put off more mature players and have people assuming this is a game for kids (as it really wont be).

This is an exciting moment for me to share. Cyrus Nemati is an extremely talented voice artist that has been in contact for over a year now (in fact I think the first email I have from him is from last August…!) and I’m so glad to show off his work!

I love the ‘animated’ nature of his voice, it’s been a real inspiration and adds such a fun element to the character – I hope you’ll agree.

He has put across many an attempt at Jason’s voice and while I’ve heard ideas that have been Branniganesque, Oh myyyyyy George Takei, Kirk, Picardian and even one inspired by his day time boss…

Next month I’ll run some lines by Cyrus and line them up to Jason’s chat animation to give you all (finally) some proper in game action from the adventure! Till then, feel free to check out Cyrus’s other work here:

So right now I’m well onto my course to beta-land, fixing and finishing art work and items, characters and animations / cut scenes. I can’t wait to show off some of the scenes as well as get some in game capture to show you your money hard at work. Lots more to come, the next few months are going to be very exciting!

As ever, thank you all for your support and if you have any other ideas for competition and the like, please let me know!

p.s. Massive Congratulations to HM Spiffing for getting funded – was always an ambitious but well deserved goal to achieve and am so glad to have been able to support them even a little!

Was very happy to see this appear on my phone on my birthday:

Congratulations Lads!
